PORT DISCOVERY CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

Baltimore, MD

General Contractor: Lewis Contractors
Architect: Cambridge Seven Associates

In 2019 we teamed with Lewis Contractors to collaborate on a unique design-build project at the Children’s Museum.  This dream project was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates. Gaithersburg Architectural Millwork was tasked with taking the Architects vision of building the hull of a ship and encapsulating the steel structure supporting an engine room and deck that would create an interactive exhibit at the Port Discovery Children’s Museum.  This ship is now an integral feature at the nonprofit children’s museum in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.  The one-of-a-kind project gave our Engineering Team and Artisans numerous unique challenges. Using our Homag-BMG 5 axis CNC we were able to cut the FR laminated plywood rib structure to the exact curve and shape of the ship’s hull which was then clad with bendable ply. We also fabricated several solid surface Ticket Kiosks for the lobby.  The Kiosks required thermoforming bright red Corian which was used to achieve the desired shape.

Looking back this project was a labor of love.  Being able to imagine the excitement in a child’s eyes when they first see this amazing ship and knowing we were a part of this collaboration reminds us that our people bring out the extraordinary in great places.
